I'm pretty new to the Explorer business. While getting a flat fixed on my baby, I noticed that the automatic 4x4 hubs on the front come off, with some grease and other mechanical goodies inside. Is packing them with grease a regular care thing? If so, could I have some instructions on doing so? I know trailer bearings real well, so I somewhat know what I'm doing. (lol) Thanks.

A few minutes after I posted, I read some old posts and someone said that you shouldn't have any grease in the hubs at all. Is this true? Thanks. (where is it coming from if you have to clean them out?)

There should be very, very little grease (like a thin coating) in the auto hub. The only thing I can think of is either the previous owner didn't know that and packed a lot in the hub or way over packed the wheel bearings.

You don't normally use bearing grease... you soak it in ATF.. and then put them on.. bearing grease will actually cause the hubs to stick..
