My oh my this place has changed a bit. I don't think i've logged in for a few years. (I like what you've done with the place)

So I have probably THE BEST Transmission failure there is.
I was rolling down the highway, roughly 55 and I heard a high pitched whirring noise coming from under me. I laid into the throttle a bit and the whirring got much higher and the tach jumped from 2250 to 3000 with little increase in speed. At this point, I've been battling problems in 5th gear for reasons unknown, so O/D is disabled to prevent overheating problems. More about that later.

I duck off on to the side and take a look, I can't see anything /obvious/, but there is what looks like steam coming off the exhaust pipe. No big deal, It has been raining.

I roll away, and I get this really nice Klunk noise, but she gets up to speed. Bout 500 feet later, no power. Nothing at all. I roll it off the highway at a crawl and try to shut it down, The gear selector won't go into park. So I had to force it in. At this point I know something is beyond gone in there.

We get it on the tow truck and to the transmission shop. It's out of warranty because it was rebuilt .... 15 months ago. The towtruck driver is outside trying to get the truck off the flatbed, and it won't roll off. It's like it's in park. But I can see from 100 feet away, it's in neutral and I didn't set the Park brake because it's chained on to the rig.

That can't be good..

So I make a few calls and we drop it off at my neighbors house because I can't afford to rebuild the transmission.
Still won't roll off. the tow truck driver had to use the weight of the truck against it to slide it off the bed. Checked every gear, And there is absolutely NO Power anywhere and the back tires are completely bound up.

I pulled the drive line from the transmission to the rear diff, and it did roll. So, the rear end isn't the problem and the transfer case isn't the problem.

Back to the Overdrive issue: We JUST replaced the solenoid pack (wouldn't you know I got my least favorite transmission, 5R55W) because an OBD Scan indicated the cause of my strobing O/D OFF light was a failed solenoid. Well, that fixed the light problem but for whatever reason, at 70 mph in 5th gear, the tach would shoot up to 3 grand just to keep its speed up, and thanks to the Torque Pro app on my phone, I'd get warnings that my transmission fluid temp would skyrocket up to 200-215, and go back down as soon as I got the the engine below 2500, or if I killed O/D again.

Does anyone have any sort of clue what the hell happened in that transmission to cause it to literally seize up like that? Oh, when we unloaded it and disconnected the driveline, It had one hell of a whirring sound coming from under it. My neighbor (who is also a mechanic) suspects it's the torque converter screaming in agony. The idea is, apparently, the transmission blew and fed into the torque converter, or possibly the torque converter failed first and fed its dead parts into the transmission. Either way, the transmission is completely gone and I'm hunting around to replace it with a used 5R55E with a good torque converter so that AT LEAST I can check the transmission fluid myself. Any feedback or ideas are helpful in this one. The truck's dead in the water and I'm so frustrated with it I've considered pulling its 3 month old tires off, selling those for the $600 they're worth and scrapping what remains of the truck, being that it's been hit and totalled 4 times, it's barely worth $1700 (It takes $1850 to rebuilt that transmission, by the way)

Thanks everyone!

I have been fighting with my trans as well spitting out servos both at different times cleaned out the snap ring groves and they held for two days then blew the top of trans housing apart. So looking for trans to put in 5r55w is in in now,how do you know a 5r55e would work lots of 5r55s for sale but nobody knows if it is compatible.
