I've recently traded my Chevy POS for apparently a Ford Explorer POS. The vehicle did not make it back to the ranch and I did a late nite tow to get it here.
The truck will not go into gear and make a horrible grinding (gears) noise. I serviced the Range Selector(RS) switch (alternately called the Manual lever Position (MLP) sensor or possibly the Neutral Safety Switch I wished they'd decide on one) which did improve the noise but still No Va..I suspect the transfer case but do not wish to go down any wrong roads (again) any help would be greatly appreciated..Peace

This vehicle has an automatic transmission 5R55E C6 AOD

little more info please,

standard or auto ?

if it's an auto that does this, it's not the t case,
if it's a manual and does this, could be the clutch or slave cylinder,

Thanx for ur help. my Explorer has an Automatic trans 5R55E C6 AOD any info or help will be greatly appreciated

Try it in 4LOW. Also let me know if PARK was holding. I suspect the transfer case myself. Let me know.

You have a 5r55e... Not a 5r55e c6 AOD.

Generally,

If you shift the trans from drive or reverse into park and you can hear the parking prawl grinding as the output shaft comes to a stop... It's the T-Case.

If you put the trans in park and the grinding stops instantly, it's in the trans.

it stops, but not instantly. also, it is really difficult to engage park w/ engine running.

I am currently having the same issues, but I am unable/ don't want to force it to engage Park with the engine running due to it sounding like "Snoopy putting the bus into gear". I CAN turn off the engine, put it in park, restart and the sound is either not as bad or non existent. I have made calls upon calls to local shops, who mostly said to drive it in and they'll look at it. :/ I did have one shop tell me that it was either a cracked flywheel causing that noise or the Tcase is bad.

I'd like to mention that i replaced w/ a used transmission that is making the same "noise" as the one that got replaced (reverse went out then a couple weeks later a loud 'clunk' then all gear positions were neutral).
am I in the same boat as him?

i took the tcase off to see if the output shaft was turning, which it did (not sure if that rules out transmsn). there was no grinding at all when selecting forward gears, nor was there when putting back into park. does that indicate that it IS the Tcase that has gone bad?
