I'm getting a periodic grinding noise from under the hood when I let off the gas on my explorer at high speeds. The noise doesn't happen all the time and typically only happens at high speeds. I'm wondering if anyone can guess at what you think it might be. Some notes:
1) I've heard the noise when letting off the gase at high speeds and when I first put my car in reverse to back out of a parking lot.
2) The noise goes away as soon as I push the gas...so basically i'll let off the gas, hear the loud grinding start up, push the gas a little bit, and it goes away.
3) noise sounds like something starting, speeding up, and then decreasing ... kind of like a fan speeding up and then slowing down (once i hit the gas).
Any ideas?
