Hello,

I am having an issue with my 93 Ford Explorer XLT. Its making this rumble growl noise and you can feel a little vibration when I am letting off the gas at higher speeds. For example. If I am cruising down hill at 55+ plus and I let off the gas a little to slow up it starts its growl/rumble and you can feel the vibration. If you let off of the gas completely it will growl for a second or two and then go away but, then, still at speed, I press the accelerator pedal a little ti starts to growl and once the car starts really going it stops. So, basically, if seems like back pressure or something. I don't really know. Because when the car is in complete coast mode it won't make the sound and when the car is accelerating it won't do it but, inbetween the two it will. And it is only noticeable at speeds above about 50 mph.

Has anyone had this happen? Does anyone know what it coule be? Let me know if you have. I have had so much luck on this forum with others pin pointing my problems and I am hoping I can iron this one out as well.

THanks.

I have the exact same thing happening with my truck (92 XLT). No idea what it is, but doesn't seem to be hurting anything. I was thinking something to do with the tranny. But hopefully not!!

Well mine doesn't seem to be getting worst but, I think is affecting the gas mileage because my gas mileage has dropped quite a bit in the last year. And I believe my trucks been making this noise about the same time. I think it might be exhause or some kind intake problem. I'm sure someone on the forum knows what happening. We'll just have to wait and see.

Same issue here, 94 xlt

sounds a lot like when a u-joint becomes loose or is starting to fail.

might be a fuel pump issue? I know i have a fuel pump issue and i hear grumbling noises when i hit the gass or let off.. might be worth a look.

So its growling on the front?

Cauz coasting noises and rumbles are sometimes associated with play in the pinion gear at the differential.

Mine is only when I let off the gas slightly at high speeds. Not when I hit the gas....no problems then.

My '91 does the same thing. The growl isn't very loud, but there is a vibration associated with it so I can feel it in the floor. The whole truck vibrates so I don't think it could be an issue with a small or non-moving part like a pump.

As soon as I apply enough gas to accellerate / place light load on the engine, the vibration stops.

I could easily see the problem being related to U-joints. It could also be in the transmision or gear chatter somewhere.

I've cleaned the IAC valve today and it did nothing for me. I thought maybe it was the truck having trouble returning to idle but, it isn't I have looked at the u-joint and it doesn't seem bad but, I don't really know what i am looking for when I am looking at the U-joint? How do I tell if its bad?

I am also wondering if it could be exhaust related?

it sounds exaust or intake related to me like maybe some sort of leak causing that vibration and rumble growl sound. maybe check your whole exaust system from the block through the cat to the muffler the whole way down the pipes. could be a hole rusted out or something small. also check your intake and exaust manifold gaskets just look for little peices that maybe coming out. My gfs s10 had a blown gasket and was leaking coolant by the head would never have known but we saw the bubbleing. just a suggestion.

good morning to all, i recently had the same problem with my truck, when i hit around 60 my truck would rumble, so i took it to the shop not the dealer, and he informed me it was the front u-joint he replaced it and now no issues with the rumble..
