Hey all. Recently I've noticed a sort of grinding/rubbing noise from the front of the vehicle but only during left turns. I'm thinking this could be the driver's side wheel bearing/hub assembly, but not sure. How do you properly check the wheel bearings? Jack the vehicle up and check for up/down play in the wheel? Thanks.

If its 2wd you can spin the wheel bearing by hand and it should feel like its moving in honey. It shouldnt spin freely.

Its probably either the cv joints or the wheel bearings.

Ok thanks, I'll jack it up and check the bearings to see how freely they spin. Since the noise is greater when making left turns would that indicate that it is likely the left wheel bearing that has the issue or the right wheel bearing given the turning radius is greater for the right wheel when making a left hand turn?

Ok I checked them out and the passenger side wheel seems to have more resistance when turning and I'm also hearing a bit of a high pitched squeal that sounds like it's coming from the hub. That combined with the groaning when turning left could that indicate a worn out passenger side bearing/hub?

Anyone else have an idea on this? If the noise is more when turning left is it logical to assume a passenger side wheel bearing/hub problem?

I'm having the exact same issue. Someone told me that the hub is out. I just want to see if anyone hand this issue and how they went about fixing it before I got spend a ton of money on it.

Thanks in advance.

i had the same squeling noise on my 91 x i replaced the wheel bearings and its fine now. they are only 30$ for inner and outer on one side. but i also have a scrubbing coming from the left side but its just my tire hittin the fender gaurd.

its probably the hub bearing assembly. If you lift the front end up and grab the tire, you can check for play in the hub.. Just be prepared to pay about $160-180 for a new hub assembly for a 4wd/awd since its a sealed unit
