How important are the frame to body ground straps? Mine are completely gone I touched them and they just fell apart.

I"d replace them sooner than later. You may experience some strange electrical behavior without proper grounding. Make sure both strap mounting surfaces are not rusted beyond use (on the frame and other parts).

The only requirement is a ground path. It doesn't have to be factory-spec.

Agreed! With all of the computer driven systems, flakey data into the computer can cause all sorts of weird and intermittent problems that are hard to trace. I just noticed the Explorer has a very corroded grand strap that i need to look more closely at.

Only experience I can offer on a ground strap is this. I replaced the engine in my Tbird and failed to replace the small ground strap. When I was finished and started the engine I though all was well. But it only started sometimes, other times it acted like a dead battery, loose/dirty connections, etc. I ran a heavy gauge wire from the block to the chassis and problem solved. Yea, they are needed.
