Hey guys!! A new member, James Leaper from England just sent me a PM about the problems he has about his Explorer. Here's the message:

Recently my dash 'check engine' warning light came on. After paying for a diagnostic it was found that the cause may be either a faulty heated oxygen sensor(s) and/or a missing or damaged exhaust manifold gasket. It says, carry out a self test using a star tester(up to 95 MY inclusive) or FDS 2000 (from '96 MY). If the codes read off indicate too weak or too rich mixture, then install a new, modified exhaust manifold gasket, carry out a road test and measure the control value of the heated oxygen sensor(s). If the measured control value of the oxygen sensor(s) is more negative than -0,15V (e.g-0,5), renew the oxygen sensor for the cylinder bank affected.

Now the problem I have is that the Ford Explorer is possible the most uncommon car in the United Kingdom. As a result of which if I take this to the main dealer, they have quoted me £617 ($987) to do the job.

The question is can I do the above?

Perhaps if any one could answer some of the following questions and advice me if I should pay the money or have a go myself.

Questions.
1) What is a heated oxygen sensor.
2)What is a star tester or FDS 2000
3)Is it easy to replace the manifold gasket and the sensors.
4)How do I measure the control value of the oxygen sensors.
5)Where and what are the cylinder banks.
6)Do you know of any parts shops in the usa that I can buy over the web.
7)What is OBD 11.

If you can help, please do, yours Jim in the UK, incidently petrol is about $7 a gallon. I am now only getting 15 to the gallon. Ouch

Alright...here's his message. Please help him.

James, welcome to the boards!! And if you have any more questions, don't hesitate posting them here. :)

Questions.
1) What is a heated oxygen sensor.
The oxygen sensor is used by the ECM to measure the percentage of oxygen in the exhaust.
2)What is a star tester or FDS 2000
This is a tester only available to Ford dealers.
3)Is it easy to replace the manifold gasket and the sensors.
This is a loaded question. Easy is a matter of opinion. Something I would think is easy is often well out of the ability of others. How much knowledge/experience do you have in auto repair?
4)How do I measure the control value of the oxygen sensors.
This is generally done with a professional quality scan tool, NOT a code reader.
5)Where and what are the cylinder banks.
Cylinder bank #1 is the right cylinder head (passenger side). Cylinder bank #2 is the left cylinder head (driver side).
6)Do you know of any parts shops in the usa that I can buy over the web.
Try Ford Parts Network.
7)What is OBD 11.
Its actually OBD II. On Board Diagnostics 2. This is the second generation computer controll system mandated by the U.S. government to be run on all vehicles produced after 1995.

Buy a hybrid!!!!! :)

5)Where and what are the cylinder banks.
Cylinder bank #1 is the right cylinder head (passenger side). Cylinder bank #2 is the left cylinder head (driver side).

First this would be the wrong way around for us (driver/passenger) as he has a RHD model so looking from the front bank #1 is on your left and bank #2 is on your right.

Secondly ask him to get in touch as there are several places in the UK to buy parts instead of FORD.

Thirdly has the fault been correctly identified? I've been on this board for quite some time now and this modified gasket idea has not cropped up before.

I thought that the exhuast manifold was directly bolted to the cylinder head, metal to metal, no gasket?
One thing I would do is a compression check. I was having a lot of O2 sensor CEL's which were finally solved by replacing a cracked head. Apparently, the crack was so small that I did have any other ill effects until it finally fouled a plug one day.

I am not sure if this is helping me, or raising more questions than answers. I am begining to think that perhaps I should spend the money and have a proffesional do the job. Perhaps there is a haynes manual on this veichle. Any one now. If so where do I get one. Thanks for any assistance, all

Jim

Yes there is a Haynes and a Chiltons manual available. Check out http://www.amazon.co.uk Haynes is £10.81 and the chiltons is £12.98. Ok.

Ive just bought both books which will arrive sometime next week. I will browse through them and see if they give me any answers. Hopefully they will, and then ill be back for more. many thanks.

jim

P.S. If i am to end this thread, what do I do!?

Just don't post anymore and it will get archived along with all the other posts. Or if you wish to delete it then just delete your opening post and the whole thread will disappear.

Hey people wouldn't it make sense for him to buy one of the little hand held code readers. He could then give us the codes and we could then begin to trouble shoot the problems.

How much and where do I buy one. Hand held code reader.

I got mine at Wal mart which I'm sure you don't have. It was around $25. If you can't find one over there I could buy one here and send it to you.
