I have known that the tailshaft extension housing seal on my 4r70W was leaking for a while, but nothing huge. Well, this last week I went to pull out from a light, and the trans slipped on me. I was on my way to get an oil change anyways, and we found the trans was 3 quarts low.

After a re-fill, everything was fine, other than the leak that had obviously gotten worse. In 3 days (over the weekend) I went through another 2 1/2 quarts, causing the trans to slip once again, very slightly. I got it to my local dealer ( my garage is filled with other peoples crap... no room for me to work) and was going to have them replace the seal.

Go figure, the tailshaft bushing was shot..... so luckily they had a brand new tailshaft extension housing on the shelf. 454 bucks and 1.5 hours later, I drove home. Its weird.... I must have had a vibration in the driveline that I either ignored or never consciously felt. It feel just absolutely butter smooth now, and there is a definite improvement in the way it drives.

This is a 1996 Explorer, with close to 200K on the clock. 5.0, 2WD. Just thought I'd share... and id let you guys know if you have that seal leak at the driveshaft, always check to see if you have play in that tailshaft bushing. Like I said, i was not really aware of it causing any issues until it was properly fixed.
