... on a manual transmission. It's been a problem for about 2 years! But now it's getting to the point where I have to do something about it. It's worse in 1st and 2nd. I can sort of get around it from a standing start by going into 3rd or 4th, and then going into 1st before moving off.

Opinions range from "don't know" to the 'shift plate'. The way it was described, it sounds plausible (lots of wear from moving into 1st and 2nd a lot). Since it's expensive to have someone open up the tranny on a hunch I'm seeking opinions or similar stories...

Hi Jane:

Your tranny problem looks like defective syncronizers, you know, those discs made of bronze that allows the gears get alligned to make the shifts.

When the syncronizers are defective the shifts becomes really hard, and when you stop you have to shift in an upper march to get that 1st engages.

I take my 92 XLT to a tranny shop to do this job. You can get a kit that comes with all the syncronyzers, roller bearing, oil seals and so on for about $350 and for, let say, $500 you can get a new tranny.

Hope this tip will be useful.

Andy :D
