2001 ford sport trac
Hi Everyone, I need help. I have a 2001 Ford Sport Trac 4x4 and having at times hard starting will crank but not kick over at time, than it will start other times with no problems. I had wires/plugs/crank senor/interia switch all replaced by a local ford dealer and still having problems starting. Once running no problems with performace. Thanks Bill..

Bill, welcome. When you turn on the key do you hear the fuel pump run to build fuel pressure?. If so are you able to check the fuel pressure?.

Mike65, I think he has a fuel problem also. Plugged filter or maybe a small fuel line leak letting it lose enough to get air while it sits. I would think if it was leaking though it would skip if it was leaking enough but a small leak to lose pressure he may not notice while driving.

It's a pressurized line, so if it is leaking, no matter how small the leak, you're going to smell it. Even the factory fuel pumps prior to the design change in 03/04/2002 are known to gradually fail. I'm betting on a pump change. Keep on struggling with the hard starting and you're going to start shortening the life of the starter, too.

I've had this problem and it was split in connections inside tank to fuel pump/pressure relief valve. The fact it runs ok once started is a good indication it is fuel pump/connections inside tank related.

If you can hear pump when turning ignition on (only lasts 4 or 5 seconds) but don't try to start it's your in tank connections(you under truck listening, a friend turning ignition on and off). If you can't hear pump, it's your pump going bad(they can work intermittently when going bad).

I doubt it's your filter, but fit new when fixing pump/connections and if you can do the work yourself you will save a lot of $$$$$$$$.
