Has anyone ever seen this happen?

So I've got a 2003 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0L V6 with 4WD and it has 150k miles on it. Runs fantastic. Just got it in July and was just really happy with it. Then, this happened when I left it in the care of a valet company at my mother's doctor's office. Y'all, that dangling bit...that's my gear shift. Ripped right out of the steering column. So, anyone ever have this happen?

Common on the ‘02’s, not sure about the ‘03’s. I knew one person that used a thick zip tie to somehow make it still function. Haven’t seen in person.

not sure if the design was flawed and updated in 04/05? As in, can you get an 04/05 part from the wrecking yard.
