Has anyone every cut open plastic around the blend door

Hi my husband is SO frustrated with the blend door problem, he wants to cut open the black plastic that surrounds the actuator and blend door. Has anyone tried to do this? He said that if he can get back there he can see what is going on. Should he attempt this? What else is back there that he could cut into and destroy or permently damage? What could he use to cut, that plastic seems very hard, will a really sharp xacto knife work?
