If there is a way to get better MPG, I would be all over it.

But would rather add cold air and new exhaust on my wife's and my G37 coupe.

The Explorer is amazing for what it is, but a racer it is not.

Look at the fricken crimp they did to that exhaust tube to get clearance!

That bottleneck needs to go! It's killing exhaust flow. It's crimped to just about 1/2 at that point.

While it does look like it is thinner from top to bottom, it also appears to have flared side to side. If I were to take a guess, they took the same diameter and merely squashed it to transition between the single and dual pipes. Not having one to look at to confirm this idea, that picture would hint at the possibility.

sure, but that kink/squash must be reducing flow considerably which means power decrease. but guess fords main concern was ride height... an aftermarket unit will probably cause the pipe to hang a couple of inches at most?

i think everyone can relate to it this way... you are enjoying a nice cold slurpee and you squash the tip of your straw where the end is now tapered... kinda tough to suck out that slurpee now eh even though same diameter. need a new straw where the tip isnt squashed ;)

Wish we could see some underside pics with a CGS or magnaflow system... or dyno sheets.

It would be interesting to see some numbers to know either way. Seeing as how mileage is so important these days, I would think Ford would engineer a powerplant with as little back-pressure as possible for the most efficient burn. We can't know without scientific data whether or not the kink/squash is resulting in any, if at all, significant flow reduction. Give us flow turbulence numbers, internal surface area, and cross-sectional area and we could probably figure it out.

Of course, it could simply have been cheaper/easier to build it that way, back-pressure be damned! :D

Who knows, but a custom exhaust would allow for the possibility of a meaner sound.

Has anyone purchased/installed either the cold air intake or the cat back exhaust system from CGS Motorsports yet?

bump

The aftermarket boys are very slow to the 2011 Explorer party.

yep... 60,000 cars sold this year and no interest by the aftermarket eh?

emailed magnaflow last week and they still have no eta on their catback.
steeda told me they have nothing in the pipeline for the explorer.
no custom grills or any other parts... except maybe running boards and hitch.

You can buy a muffler from anyone, CGS, Magnaflow etc, take to a shop, and have a custom exhaust run. Will be way cheaper and you'll have a nice setup vs waiting on an eta that could never happen ;) . Not hard lol

i've installed kooks long tubes with hi-flow catback setup on my z06 by myself and was just wanting to get a kit and play diy'er.

I was thinking of it just for fun to have someone custom it then if I get the spare change because compared to some cars i've seen, this is pretty much a straight setup with very mild bends. maybe see if steeda here would like to use my test vehicle to save a few $?

question though... what looks like two huge tanks right after each header... are those cats? and then two more small ones in series at the driveshaft tube for 4 total? (in my pic it kinda looks like two cats in series at the tube)

so if i have a custom built one... will i go with 4 cats total like stock or just go two (after each header) or ever one at the driveshaft tube?

guess it depends too where the o2 sensors are two?

on my z06 i believe i had a 4 cat setup stock and went to two with the kooks. but by eliminating a set of cats and in this case there were 02 sensors before and after the cats, it throw off a service light even though it's ok.

the explorer only looks to have one set of o2 sensors before the cats and if possible would like to avoid throwing codes.

Does anyone know what a reasonable price would be for a shop to install both the cold air intake and cat back exhaust system with the parts already paid for? Both individually and together? I'm just looking for a ballpark figure.

i just had the intake installed today. you can definitely feel the difference and it sounds great. check on ebay as i saw one listed for around 220, i paid 300 for mine

Hey when you get a chance please post some pictures and a an honest assement of it. You are talking about the CGS intake right?

will do, ill get some pics up tomorrow. as far as performance goes im definitely not an expert on car performance or anything but it seems a lot more responsive (especially climbing hills) and the sound is very nice. Almost like a deep, throaty growl. If your into customizing things on your car I'd definitely recommend it
