Backstory, my aunt bought the explorer new in 93 and kept very good maintenance records for it. No record of anything major done to the engine or transmission. No head gaskets or transmission rebuild. It currently has 211,000 miles and I recently did a lower intake gasket on it though.

I have no issues hinting that either the motor or transmission might have any issues anytime soon, so it just makes me curious whether any work has been done on those. Is there a way I can tell if either has been repaired? I have owned the truck since 165,000 miles. It just makes me curious considering the transmissions are known to not last to 200,000 miles without issues.

I'm assuming that since it has 3.73's and aux. transmission cooler(towing package) and has never been used to tow, that it reduced stress on the transmission and this may be why its in such good shape.

Anyone got any ideas or input? Similar long lasting engine/transmission?

My dad's lasted over 200,000 miles. These transmissions get a bad rep, but they are not much worse than anything else. If you take care of it and don't beat on it, it can last a very long time.

It was at 220,000 and only had problems because of a teenage girl driving it.

Anyone know if Carfax will show whether this has been done or not?

My 4.0 OHV and A4ld Got the **** kicked out of them on a daily basis. I mean brutally. Burnouts, donuts, ever light full throttle, reverse to drive @ full throttle, etc for every mile after 65K (when I got the truck). The oil got changed every 10k miles or so, the tranny fluid got filled back up when it would slip around on/off ramps (never changed). The trans lasted until around 180K, it only blew up after the vacuum modulator was changed and line pressure was bumped up so it would chirp 3rd gear. The engine still starts and runs fine at 210K.

Morale of this story is, Dont underestimate the 4.0l or the A4LD. They may surprise you.

I doubt it highly. Carfax is over-hyped. The information you get from it only reflects what has been reported by DMV's. You are taking your chances if you want carfax to tell you if you car was in an accident or flood, let alone a tranny rebuild.

I know of many cars that were in accidents and carfax never caught them.

But it is amazing how many people see a clean carfax and believe the car they are considering is in great shape because nothing showed up on carfax.

Carfax may tell you about the car's ownership history and that can be useful if the vehicle you are considering is a former fleet vehicle.

Not disputing the carfax comment... it can be misleading. On my xploder, I happen to be the 2nd owner, as there are only 2 dmv title issues reported, the previous owner and mine. (I ran an autocheck on mine) Fortunately the truck being from NC there was inspection records with mileage indicated. One at 52k and another at 114k. She now has 199k w/ no serious issues.

The moral of the story is not all vehicle checks will indicate when it was serviced, inspected or mileage annotated when title was issued. (Have you ever looked at a history report on ebay? Some DMV clerks are dee dit dee's and put "not actual mileage" even if the vehicle has a 6 digit odometer. Really? I mean how much more info do you need?)

Anyways a carfax or autocheck can be helpful and harmful. The odds of the explorer owned by the aunt being all original are probably pretty high. "MOST" ladies don't drive the holy piss out of a vehicle and tend to have little squeaks and rattles fixed. It's just been my observation.

Have a great day y'all....
