Last week I broke down and got a set of the Bosch plats + 4's and installed them. Well, after getting the passenger side done (cause it was easier), I turn the ignition key on to unlock the steering wheel and crank the wheel to the left to make some more room (which was stupid cause I ended up taking the wheel off anyway), and I thought I saw something fly by the corner of my eye? So I walk back to the front of Barney and there's red fluid squirted over the left front fender and all over the inside too!!! It seems the power steering pump puked fluid out the pressure relief hole! Freaked me out! That stuff smells too! The fluid actually made it 2 feet outside the engine bay! So other than the cleanup, no ill affects. Dead Link Removed So, just a heads up. If your bored and want to impress the old lady with some tricks...Actually she likes it when I squirt her with the windshild wiper fluid when shes standing outside the truck...

Yeah, my truck wouldn't start once so I pushed it into the driveway. While turning the steering wheel I freaked when I though my transmission was leaking fluid - turned out to be the pump - no leaks, just had a case of the squirts.

Squirt Squirt

My dad's 1970 3/4 ton F250 does the same thing when it wants to not start and you push it and turn the steering manually. What a mess. I see Ford hasn't change this ??feature??. FYI, his 390 V8 uses the same oil filter as my SOHC.

All the fords I have owned have done this so far. The presure builds up the cap bursts off and you get a neat mess!

The reason that happens is because the engine is not started, the power steering pump is not turning. Therefore, when the wheel is turned, tremendous pressure builds up in the pump and it shoots some fluid out. It's not just Ford power steering that does this.
