When I try to lock the doors in my 96 (either with the button inside or with the key fob) the hatch lock makes a lot of noise. Almost like it keeps on trying to lock, kind of lick its grinding. It only does it when locking, not when unlocking. Any ideas? Lock actuator gone bad perhaps?

open it up!

removing the inside door plastic panels should be a snap.. then press away my friend, press away.. and u should be able to see whats going izon to the trizon.

When my hatch lock actuator was toast it would make a noise when you pressed the keyfob or lock switch. It was kind of like a whirring sound. Also the lock would not actually lock. I replaced the actuator and all was good. Took apart the old actuator and the plastic gears inside were shot...whirring sound was the little electric motor spinning with no gears attached.

YUP!

I had the same issue, but is his working? It didn't sound like it wasn't working for him.

Nonetheless, take the panel off as the other guy said and see what's going "izon" :D

It use to not lock, but works now, just VERY noisly.

OK, now it will lock, and make the noise while doing so, and then sometimes not unlock. I need to figure out what is doing this because it is just plain emabarassing to lock the doors in public.

It's the door lock actuator, It is going bad. I just had the same problem, I bought a used one from a member on this site, and it works like a charm now. Hope this helps you out.

OK, thanks. Now can any model year hatch lock actuator fit mine?

Don't know. I think the actutator for my 98 was around $75 from the dealership. Why don't you just call a dealership and find out or try Ford Parts Network. They should be able to tell you.

so how do you get that thing out it looks like it all riveted in?
