The handle just popped one day when I tried to open the hatchback. No resistance on the handle so I removed the back panel and found that a plastic clip had broken. I ordered the clips, but after several weeks of opening the hatchback manually I must have lost the rod that was attached to the handle because I can no longer locate it.

Where can I purchase the rod and where can I find a diagram on how to reconnect everything properly.

Thanks!

I suspect it's going to be a junk yard part... I don't think they're available separately anymore. Are you sure the rod didn't just fall down inside the door? Open the hatch and give it a good shake or three and it may shake loose from wherever it's stuck. I don't think it can fit out of any of the weep holes along the bottom edge...

yeah, I ran my and in there and checked with a flashlight. I had left the panel off while I ordered the part so I'm sure it must have fallen out and I just didn't notice. What a pain this has turned out to be over a freakin cheap plastic clip.

Ledford, I have the same exact problem with the yellow plastic clip. Where did you order the new clips from? I bought some door clips from Advanced Auto Parts but I am unsure how they are going to work. For now, I popped my rod back onto the clip and its been working for a couple months, but I want to fix it for good.

I put mine back on when the problem first started and it lasted less than a week. I bought a box of clips on ebay. Do a search for:
Door Lock Rod Clip / Yellow Nylon / 5/32” Rod Size/ Replaces Ford: E6AZ-5421952-A,390523S 1986-On

Thanks! I am going to try to order the Ford clips..
