Ok here it is folks!

MY REAR BUMPER SUCKS!

I have a 98 Limited 4.0 SOHC white Explorer and the rear bumper sticks out way to far for me I am having a hard time finding a solution and ideas?

Look at the bumper here what do you think?
(removed link to pic) Bandwidth $$ :)

Thanks to everyone who helped and to the little shi7s that keep us a$$holes busy. (you know who you are)

The only thing I can think of is to get a roll pan, but that would get rid of your bumper completely. Is that what you want? I thought I saw posted somewhere on here, something about a roll pan for the explorer. You might also be able to modify one for a ranger.

ahh, your screwed. welcome to the club.

There has to be a solution. You say I am screwed, does this mean you have look for a solution to this?

Let me know what you have tried or researched so I dont waste my time... :)

THanks

well, my solution was to switch over from the stupid chrome rear quarter panel pieces on the xlt and instead go to the painted limited ones and paint the top of my bumper. you already have both of those things, since you have a limited.

the next step is to look for a roll pan right? well they don't exist and you have to do extensive cutting and metal work to make one from scratch or about the same amount of work to modify one from another truck to make it fit properly. Of course you could be one of the few to take the plunge and do the bodywork to make it happen, but i doubt that is something you want to do any more than the rest of us.

one last option would be getting a bumper cover. lol. like they have on those explorer conversion things. i'm joking about this one.

What do you want us to say? Are you asking us to be your bumper savior? Well, it isn't possible. The only thing you can do is a rollpan, which consists of many many hours of custom fabrication. Do a search for it.

whoa whoa whoa. dude, chill. its just a bumper; every car and truck has 'em.

whats the problem?...functionality or looks? does it kepp you from reaching the contents in your trunk or do you just not like how it looks? if youre really losing sleep over it, you can either fabricate one of your own, or have a place do it for you - having a part cusotm made isnt unheard of.

good luck; maybe youll start a trend - if it looks good, i bet youll have a lot of followers.

if you gonna go big with your truck you could just take your bumper off and have a thinner bumper bent out of some heavy duty pipes. i think that could look really cool, if you plan on putting some air between it and the ground.

if your wondering what i've looked into for building parts for the explorer? well, the ranger one doesn't fit, the f150 one doesn't fit, the s10 one doesn't fit, etc. the best way to do it is to find one for a vehicle that is a little bit wider int he rear than the x and start by trimming and bending etc. etc.

I am chill - Just looking for advice - and thank you for that advice.

To be honest the problem is that most trucks and cars I have and or have seen dont have a bumber you can land a jet on, ok.... maybe not a jet but this thing is big enough for a picnic over here!

I will find a solution if I must machine one our of steel!

Thanks for the real advice. It is goo dto see people willing to help and not start trouble over a simple question. ;)

Thanks again.

I will let you' know how it goes.

one more thing, if you remove your rear bumper you will see that you have framerails that extend back a little past what you would want to have be the flush point for your roll pan. these need to be CUT, then you can do a little trimming on your limited rear quarter panel pieces and use them in the construction of your roll pan. when your done you should have a steel pan across the back that is connected to those pieces on either side with a little bit of body filler (if you want it to look unified) or it would be easier to build the pan and leave a little gap between it and the quarter panel pieces (since connecting metal to plastic seemlessly isn't a great idea). another problem is, that either way you do this the line running down the middle of your quarter panel piece (if you look you'll know what i mean) will have to be filled in order to not look dumb (well if you leave it it will look as dumb as it did stock, but if your gonna do this, your also gonna want to do that) of course there is always the third option of removing the quarter panel pieces entirely and making a custom pan that replaces them and curves around in one piece steel. this is a great plan, but it will take even more custom work than the others, and it will be very hard to make it look right with the lines of the truck in the rear. good luck, and if you want i can try and find you some pics of trucks with this done.

get CoryL to custom fab ya one. There's nothing he can't make w/ tubing and a welder.

i wasnt starting trouble, but your rather dramatic use of capitals and exclamation points makes it look like you think the world is gonna end because youre not happy with the stock bumper, heh. i was merely stating that its just a bumper, and its nothing to lose sleep over (though, ive been a victim to the same insanity over exhaust, but im learning to deal with my flaws ;) )

i think the bumper on X's is actually quite proportionate to the size of the vehicle, but if youre not happy with it, go for a custom deal. a couple people have had custom ones made and they look great.

Bro, I am in here asking legit questions and am getting good answers from everyone. ALl of a sudden you deside to stick your head in here and start static with me, over my concern with my bumper... It is like you are taking my concern with my bumper personally and associating it with your bumper or something.

If you don't like my questions or my style of type. Then dont read my posts.

If you want to call me a dick (OPENUPWIDE)

alright, i'm not on my home computer right now, (it is in getting its disc drive repaired) so i can't pull up pics from my hard drive. however, i have seen probably four or five 2nd gens with roll pans in the past. you might try searching cardomain for explorer and roll pan? or just making a thread in the sport truck section here asking for pics. since the fall of hte underground it is hard to find good place for this type of stuff. or if you hang on a few days or weeks (those batards at best buy suck) i'll post some myself.

they ARE more common on 1st gens though so you should be able to find pics of them on a 1st gen fairly easily and get a sense of how it looks

first of all, i am not your "bro."

yes, you are getting good answers from everyone - the same answers ive given also in this thread.

i didnt start any static. after my first post, where i gave a legitimate suggestion, you got all defensive, for no apparent reason.

at no point did i compare your bumper to mine (though, wouldnt it be implied since theyre the same bumper from the same generation of trucks?)

i have no problem with your questions, your style of type, however, is questionable. are you aware that when you use excessive capital letters on the internet, it implies yelling?...and the exclamation points dont help either.

thanks for the invitation to not read your posts anymore, that was mighty sporty of ya.

ill leave that last remark undignified since im 100% sure you would never say that my face.

have a nice day.
