I've been working on this problem for a couple weeks. My headlihgts just came on one day at 12 noon on a bright sunny day. The only way I could get them to shut off is to pull a fuse from the box under the hood. I have replaced the headlight switch, the multi-function switch, the rear view mirror (with the auto lamp circuit board) and a module I believe to be the generic electronic module located behind the radio. None of these had any affect at all. All these parts came from a salvage yard, but what are the chances they are bad to? Usually when I put the fuse in, the headlights come on, but every once in a while they don't initially but always come on eventually. Help!

If there is a ground coming out of your autolamp module on pin 2, then your headlights come on..... sssoooo if it there when its not suppose to be there, then the module has a problem. If it isn't there when the problem happens, then its possibly a faulty headlamp relay.

Welcome to this forum! The first thing to do is get a schematic of the headlight circuit with the wiring color codes. You could check AutoZone's website for a diagram. Maybe there is a relay from an alarm system which is causing this problem. I've encountered a similar problem on a Buick Century. I unplugged the alarm, and that solved the problem. At first, I just unplugged, and reconnected the alarm module which reset it. The problem was inside of the module, so it came back along with an intermittent no start condition from the starter kill.

My 1999 Explorer will automatically turn the lights on when it gets dark but takes the full 3 minutes to turn off. The OFF position on my mirror for the autolamp does not have an affect on the lights. It now always takes at least three minutes to turn the headlights off. My owners book shows a relay for the autolamp in position 4 of the Central Junction box. This relay I pulled out when the lights were stuck on and it had no immediate effect. I will keep you posted if I find the darn relay. I do hear it click off after quite a long time when I turn my car off.

Actually Mitch.... I don't think you are using your system correctly although I don't know cause I don't have that equipment. But there are a couple controls. The delay (at least in 96 explanation) can run up to 3 minutes and from the description you move the switch (knob) to the right to decrease and left to increase... my money says that's what you've done.... the on/off doesn't control this function (ie. light delay).... the on/off only controls auto lights on/off (ie. when they should come on).
As for when they should come on, there is a little "pin hole" in the mirror that controls that and there has been discussion about setting that.

Well is there anyway to just disable the autolights? Go back to the old method of turning the headlight switch on and off? My lights stay on in excess of 5 minutes before actually turning off.
