I have a question about headers for the V8. Could I use headers made for the 90's and up stang on my truck? If so, what type of headers (i.e. shorty, 4 into 3 etc). I really don't want to pay the price that Explorer Express is asking if I don't have to. Thanks

Hey there... you can not use the Mustang headers because your Explorer has GT-40P heads while the Mustang has E7TE heads. I suggest getting Ford Motorsport headers from a motorsport dealer. I checked and they were $260,which I thought was quite fair. Plus, I sure like the fact that these headers were designed by the same company who built the engine. Hope this helps!

The ford motorsport header is crap. It is a header in the loosest sense of the word. I have been trying to figure what headers will fit. Some of the ranger v8 conversion headers may fit if you change the motor mounts.

The worst part about the motorsport "turd" headers is that they are better than stock. Even though they are better than stock, they aren't even close to being as good as the stock mustang headers. (stock mustang headers are generally considered junk, anyway.)

getting back to the point, Kauffman products makes some nice looking headers, but they may not work (even with a motor mount change)

BTW, what are the headers that explorer express sells? ford motorsport ?

good luck,

Andrew

Andrew:

I only got a glance at the Motorsport headers one time, and they looked better than the Mustang factory headers; no pinched tubes at the flange. Troll said in a post months back that they were junk, but he didn't clarify. I got an e-mail from another guy whose name escapes me now, but he said they made a noticeable difference in the mid-range. He also said that the stock headers were pinched down to something like 1/2" in places!

I don't know of any other headers made for the V8 model. Yes, the ones from Explorer Express are the Motorsport.

Has anyone put headers on? Should I look for headers that fit the GT-40P heads?

V8 Headers

When I first bought my explorer I put the SVO headers on it and it is an improvment over stock. The problem with the SVO headers is that the tubes come out of the front two flanges and then the last two cylinders meet with those two and then go into the collector. So basically it goes from one tube and then another tube connects to it,then that one tube goes down to the collector. Basically you have only two tubes going to the collectors. That hurts you power greatly. If you want to make real power you must either get custom made headers like I did or make a pair of headers designed for a V8 ranger swap fit.

quad and troll are right the svo are better then stock but they are still the most restrictive svo header ford has every made.you best bet is to use v8 ranger swap headers or take you stock headers to a good speed shop that does headers and make big tube versons for you. in the worse case you will just have to use the svo one with a big exhaust to make up for it. go to http://www.speedfreak.cc to see pics of trolls headers. you can tell by the weld the guy who made them was a miracle worker.

Troll, Nice truck, what did the custom made headers run? I really don't want to spend a whole lot of money (saving for that engagement ring dudad :))
