Headlamp Switch Burp???

This morning after pulling into work (4:25am), I put it in park, killed the engine, then proceeded to shut off my headlights. They stayed on while my switch was off. I thought for sure I was gonna have to dig out my tools, pop my hood, and take off my ground all under 5 minutes before punching in. I clicked it a few more times, then on the 4-5th try they FINALLY shut off with the switch.

I noticed when they finally did shut off and react to the switch, I heard a small click inside of my dash. Sounded like from behind the radio and climate control area. (I dont know for sure, my senses aren't 100% at half past four in the morning). So it really could have come from anywhere, but FOR sure it was behind the dash. At lunch (9:00am) I went out and tried them 3-4 times. They worked fine. After I got off (2:30pm) they resume to work flawless.

So my question is...anyone have any thoughts? With the click and whatnot. What would cause them to not work this morning for those 4-5 turns on the dial, then all of the sudden work ? Is there a relay somewhere for the headlamp switch somewhere in the dash area?

I mainly want to know what the "click" could have been. I hate electrical problems -.-

Did you check the slider switch on the rear view mirror? Move it all the way to the left. If it is slid over to the right, the lights will stay on for a period of time depending on how far the slider is moved.

If you don't have a slider, then heck if I know what is going on!

Edit: I should mention that this feature only operates in lower light conditions.

Headlights or full running lights?

I would say either the switch is going bad or as Eric said, auto lamps.

Never did think about the auto dim slider. JUST now went out and checked it. It is all the way to the left.

Just in case is does happen again and I attempt to change the switch, anyone gotta write up?

I've had this happen to me a couple of times too. Even if I look at the auto dim slider and push it all the way left, there's no change. However, if I run it all the way right and then back left, they go out.
I imagine that since I don't really move it, ever, that some dust gets into the potentiometer and gives it a false reading, that is resolved by moving the pot through its full range.
