Headlights ( Sorry HI-BEAMS ) wont turn OFF!!!!!

Hi everyone, hope your all having a great christmas. Ok so, my wifes '97 4.0 sohc exploder has all the usual probs, ie transmission with a mind of its own, and a bit of a rattle on cold mornings at startup. But you know the thing has never let us down, and with 230,000 k's on it I cant grumble. Plus she likes it - so thats a boon. So, this is my problem. Boxing day I get up with a fuzzy head, and fighting my way through mounds of wrapping paper in the living room, I open the curtains and notice that the HI BEAMS are ON on the X. WTF?? So out into the freezing ontario weather I go, expecting to see a switch left on or something. HA! not a chance, everything is switched off. I try all the dumb stuff, then start removing all associated fuses and relays etc. But I cant get them to go out! I have pulled every relay, and fuse, but still no joy! I have now pulled the plug on the back of the actual bulbs, so as to not kill the battery. Also, the "Hi Beam" indicator on the dash is constantly illuminated, whether the ignition is on or not. Has anyone had this problem before? Everything else as far as lighting works fine. How the heck did this develope over night? It's never done this before. Anyway, any help or pointers would be greatfully recieved.
Thanks everyone, and Merry Xmas!

did you try to pull the fog lamp relay? If I remember one of the headlight wires go to this for some reason. Just a thought.

Could be a bad multifunction switch. When you pull the stalk towards you (the "flash to pass"), the high-beams will come on even if the main light switch is off.

Ok guys, thanks for that input. I will double check the fog lamp relay, and make sure that the multfunction switch is doing its job. I will get back to you with what I find asap.
Cheers.

OK guys, my mistake its actually the hi beams that are staying on no matter what. Ok so I pulled the 15a mini fuse in the engine compartment that is listed as the DRL/Fog lamps/Off-road lamps and now everything is fine. The multifunction stalk is all perfect, but now obviously we now have no front lower fog lamps!! Now am I right in saying that if you are driving with headlamps on normal/dip and fog lamps illuminated, that when you swith on your hibeams the fog lamps are automatically switched off, and then switched on again as soon as you revert back to headlamps/dip beam. If so then there must be a relay that controls that auto switching but where the hell is it? The manual isn't much good. Anyway, what do you think?

It is likely that your DRL module has given up the "ghost of xmas past"... :-) since these "interplay" with your highbeams.

Ok budwich thanks for that. I was able to do a search for DRL on the forums thanks to you, I wouldnt have known to search for that otherwise. It is all looking pretty familiar now. I will figure it out and post my conclusion asap. Thanks again guys.

Happy Holidays ! Hope you get it fixed... Glad you found us !

Thanks, will get to the bottom of it all at the weekend.
Have a good new years all.
