My dad was talking to a 4x4 guy, and he said the explorers have a 1 piece differential or the u-joint is attached to the rear end orsomething silly, and its really expensive to fix. it sounds liek a load of crap to me, or the guy is just mixed up in what he is talking about. from what i know about ford stuff, it would just be a transfer case, u-joint, driveshaft, u-joint, and rear end. all of which are easily removable and replaceable, correct?

Doesnt sound right to me. Dont believe anyone that talks about explorers, other than from this site.

What? huh? Explorer's have regular old flanges and u-joints just like most any other truck. Your friend's dad MIGHT be talking about the bronco II they had some sort of crazy one piece driveshaft/CV thing going on.

The front drive shafts on 95+ 4wd Explorers are a CV type shaft that attaches to the transfercase. It uses a standard U-joint from the drive shaft to the front differiental. It kinda looks like it's 1 piece, but it really isn't. So this rumor is indeed kind of correct, if you have a 95+ Explorer. I don't know about the 91-94 models, but I'm sure one of our gurus on the pre95's will chime in here pretty soon.

thats what i thought. hes an old school bronco guy, and i told my dad that his friend was off his rocker. i cant see ford taking the 8.8 and making some stupid 1 piece driveshaft attached to it.

Bronco also use a CV joint shaft, so he shouldn't be too surprised.

The 91-94 just have u-joint fronts all around, front and back, no CVs. Alot of people add CVs to the rear on the t-case side to calm down some of the vibrations though.

right on, thanks guys.

I thought it was 97+... My 96 had a double cardon u-joint, and so does my extended one.
