its getting cold up in NY and i started using the heat. no problem with blowing hot air but then it gets too hot so i turn the dial over to the left so that the air isnt so hot but it doesnt change. if i turn it all the way over to cold shouldnt it just blow outside air?? thats what all other cars do. if anyone knows why i cant change the temp please let me know. also, there is no problem with engine temp... that is right where it should be.

Probably your heater blend door. Do a search for it and you will find a lot of information regarding the problem. One of the posts, I posted part of the text from a Ford TSB regarding the problem. It isn't fixed cheaply though, usually around $1000 (mostly labor).

My Explorer just started doing the same thing.

When you turn down the heat, it does not get cooler!

As well, at the end of the last summer, the A/C does not work in the low setting at all. You have to switch the A/C to maximum for the A/C to work properly.

If you find a fix, please let me know.

yeah thats the same as me. Ford messed up and we have to pay for it. i have not got mine fixed yet. i read somewhere that someone argued with ford and only had to pay 10% of the final cost. After all, there is a TSB on it, which means they know they messed up and i think they should pay for their mistakes -- no matter how long the repair will take.

Check your heater control valve also. It should be vaccum controled. If you take it off, you should be able to move the valve in it easily, if not replace it.
