I bought my daughter's 98 Explorer and the heat is always on high, even in the summer. I presume this a a problem with the blend door (actuator...?) and I need some help in dealing with this. Any advice will be useful.

Are you saying that the blower is always on high?? If that's the case most likely you need a new blower motor resistor, a very common problem with our trucks.

Heater problems on a 98 explorer

Hi there!

I have experienced this a couple of times. I presume that you cannot get your explorer to switch from hot to cold, or vice versa. If this is the case, It most likely is a blend door problem. The problem that occurs is that the motor that spins the blend door fits like a lock into a key on the blend door. The motor is the little white box on top of the blend door behind the glove box. It can be challenging to remove the motor, but it can be done. From my experience, it is usually the "key hole" on the top of the blend door that splits and thus the "key" spins and cannot turn the door with the "lock." If you can remove the motor, try and have a look at the top of the blend door with the aid of a mirror. If there are cracks there, you may need to replace the whole blend door assembly ( a time consuming dash out procedure). I hope this helps. Good luck!

you need a blend door actuator most likely. i dont recall 2nd gens breaking blend doors.

Hi, First check to see if the actuator is working. If it is then it is most likely the blend door. I had a broken blend door and found this thread very helpful. Once I determined that it was the door I had to do the cut from the bottom. All worked out ok and works great today. Hope this helps.

This old junkyard dog has learned a couple of new tricks here. It is nice to know that you don't have to replace the whole assembly....sounds much easier than what i have had to do in the past. The quoted posts were quite helpful and humbling. Thanks and good luck!

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the A/C & heater section. The blend door is a very common issue on these vehicles. A quick seach will show you a lot of threads on how to fix it.
