same sort of thing

my x is a 2003 xlt manual heat controls
heat and ac work fine, control that chooses path of air (feet, dash etc.) works fine, fan speed control works fine.
issue is that when trying to go from hot to cold (or the opposite) with the middle control dial something is wrong. there is a clicking sound that starts and it seems as if a door is trying to move but can't. if I crank the fan the rush of air "slams " the door and the adjustment is done.
have seen the "blend door fix" for 01's and older, not sure of my options.
I can take the dash apart but it looks like the whole thing basically has to be removed before you get access to the problem.
just wondering if anyone has been through this and what advice they might be able to offer
Thanks

I hate to bring up an old post but did anyone else have this problem and either fix it themselves or have it fixed? I have the same problem from my '03 and really don't want to spend $1000 to get this fixed if I can do it myself. I will check vacuum lines but would like to hear what the fix was. Thanks in advance.
