How did I screw this up?
Mounted everything per directions- except for the green wire from the switch, which I tapped into the accessory wire from my head unit.
Re-connected the battery, and nothing works. No light on the toggle switch, and my stereo won’t even turn on. The stereo will flash the time- so the constant feed is still good, but with the key in the on and acc positions I can’t even power up the deck.
I disconnected the tap to the acc wire and re-connected the deck and still nothing.
How could this have affected the stereo?
The only thing I can see I have wired wrong is the toggle switch as the directions do not indicate which post are to be connected to which wires ( 3 post switch- ground, green ‘to lights’ and the yellow wire to relay post #86) but surely this has no bearing on the head unit.

No lights, no stereo = one bitter individual desperately seeking assistance.

Been there and done that... the wiring diagram is Inaccurate. Check out the thread below... It has lots of detailed pics and 2 wiring diagrams. The diagrams use the same color coded wire as what came in my Hella 500 wiring harness. I would recommend connecting the switch to the High beam circuit as it allows you to toggle the Hella's on and off with the standard light stick...

My Hella install thread 1st Gen..

Great write up, thanks for the link.
From your diagram, it looks as if I have the switch wired incorrectly.
If I understand the diagram correctly it should go: (top to bottom) Green Wire (Switch's source power-parking/high beams or constant 12v source), Yellow Wire in the middle (Load- to relay) and finally the switch ground wire on the bottom pole.

Any idea as to why tapping my head units switched power line has caused the apparent failure? I cannot see how the switch being incorrectly hooked up would have any affect on the radio.

The switch should have a tiny wiring schematic on it indicating power, load, and ground... Which wire did you put in the top middle and lower positions? It would be easy to cross wire the switch and force the power to ground which would have caused a short, thus blowing the fuse(s) on the amp...

Yup, you are correct. The switch does have a very small diagram on the back (wish I had noticed it earlier). I had it wired- load on op, ground in the middle and the power lead on the bottom.
The fuses on the deck and amp are ok. So I’ll have to pull the manual and check which fuse in the block is for the radio and check it.
Thanks again for the input.

Yes, you shorted the power wire and blew a fuse...If the fuses are all the same rating the one nearest the battery is the one most likely to blow first. BTW RadioShack Sells the exact same switch (but in several diff colors). I picked up a RED switch to use for my (Future mod) Rear backup lights.

It was the 7.5a radio fuse that shorted. Replaced it, rewired the switch and the lights now function.
Only thing is they now won't turn off- Is it possible that this short also fragged the switch? Guess I'm off to Radio Shack to pick up a new switch.

Your switch is fine as it it rated for over 10A and your fuse blew @ 7.5. Does the switch light up in both the on and off positions or just on? Double check the wires going to the relay with my diagram/picture as the Original Hella instruction diagram was WRONG.

I picked up a new switch from Radio Shack, swapped it in and everything functions normally.
I don't know what the issue with the supplied switch was, but for the three bucks the new switch cost, I won't be loosing any sleep over it being deficient.

Once again,thanks for your assistance!

Good to hear everything is working...
