Well Hello, I figured that I would drop in and say a few words and introduce myself. I have a 07 Ford Explorer EB with the 4.6 V8. Before you flame me for having an 8cyl and hating the gas milage I do actually tow with it. I have a 23ft Kodiak Scamper Travel Trailer that I tow with it. This is the Third Explorer that I have had in a row. (Yes, I lease!) The current model that I have now has only 10,500 miles on it. Told you that I hate to fuel economy.
Other than saying hello I figured that I could compare the three that I have owned and I wanted to vent about a few problems that I am having with my current model.
My first Explorer was a 2001 Explorer Sport 2wd. Thats the explorer that started it all. It was also the first tow vehicle for my Travel Trailer. Not the best tow vehicle but sufficent. Alone, with out the trailer it was a fairly spirted truck, Sporty Interior and fun to drive. I Don't recall any major problems with that vehicle.
My second and really my favorite, 2004 Ford Explorer XLT This one had the 4.6l V-8 and really did a fine job of hauling my travel trailer. It definitly drove more like a truck than the current model. I found the seats way more comfortable and surprisingly enough I think that it pulled my Travel Trailer better than my 07 does with better economy. With this truck I got more comfortable towing my trailer and really took it further distances than I did with my sport. The only noticable problem that I had with this one was the entire dash including stereo went out on a camping trip and I actually had to haul it home with nothing working up there on the dash, kinda scary. It ended up being when Ford put in the aftermarket DVD system it pinched some wires in the over head and made fuse after fuse blow.
Now for my problem child. My Eddie Bauer. We really inteded to buy the 04 when it was said and done with but the dealer really gave us a good deal on the lease of our EB. It was less than what I was paying for the 04 XLT. I couldn't refuse. The only option that this thing doesnt have is Power Fold seats and the DVD navigation system. I still believe that maps work great. Now don't get me wrong its not like this thing has really wronged me in any way. I was just spoiled with the first two. First and formost those are not Crome 18" wheels. Or if you ask me they are not Crome clad either. They are an 18" version of the 17" Aluminum Wheel with a Crome Esq' plastic hub cap that's permatly affixed to the wheel. When it gets hot outside they creak and almost sound as though there are rocks in them. I have had Ford replace the wheels once and they are going to have to do it again. Throttle Clunk, anyone else have this. Driving down the road around 35 to 50 mph and the truck has a subtle clunk happens once every now and then. When it does clunk you feel in in the gas petal, kinda like how Cruise control felt if you had you foot on the petal and you turned it off. I took it in for that and they reprogrammed my PCU. It went away for a few months but now it's back and actually worse than before. I also have a vibration on my steering wheel at idle. The engine sometimes seems as though its missing and it surges when it idles, this is worse when it is cold. I get nowhere the mileage that I thought that I would get. Over 10 tanks of gas and 12.9 MPG accrording to the trip MPG thing. I get about 240 miles to the tank. Remember it's supposed to have more power and economy than the pervious gen 4.6l engine. For the most part it is all city driving. Now this is not my daily driver. It really is my wifes car and I drive when I am hauling something. It will be going to the dealer again but just wondering if you all have had any of these problems with your current gen explorer.
I really hope that I didn't sound negative, really just being inquisitive. Please don't take it in a bad way I like my truck, Just not as much as my last.
BTW anyone seen that New Explorer, the concept, Looks like my next truck wont be an explorer!
