well im supposed to post here and let everyone get to know me soo...
(sorry for the horribly long post, i get carried away while typing)
im an 18 year old male, im a senior in high school in a small town in ohio. im going to a vocational school for my junior and senior years in precision machining technology. i consider myself a computer nerd, mostly into gaming and overclocking, modding, vmods. in my past ive been into CB and some illegal activity in licensed bands... (and dealt with the consequences)
i am employed at a local internet service provider, we do wireless and dialup, and alot of computer repair / custom builds / upgrades and such. the local computer place. i live with my parents, in a trailor. (miss the old house with a garage) all when i was growin up my dad fixed cars for an income, and during the summer i was always watching as much as i could, helping where i could till eventually when i was 8 i replaced a head gasked on some 90-ish olds all by myself (i was proud) with the exception of having help breaking loose some bolts, followed the haynes manual and didnt have a prob. in my childhood ive built a few gokarts, i actually want to build another so i can get a motor and play with grindin the head to get more compression
i havnt mentioned, i hope to go to college somewhere for high performance motorsports, i want to be able to do all the machining to a motor, balancing cranks, boring (**** i could bore now if i had a big enough mill) doin valve jobs grindin heads portin and all that. im also interested in tranny work, plus i'd love to explore in computer controlled fuel systems, i want to play with the idea of a tuned port system with an o2 sensor for each cylinder, and i wanna build either an LCD or LED display for tach, coolant temps, prolly put sensors on the block and tranny, and in the intake air... but these are just dreams ive come up with lol.
i hope im not getting boring, im just trying to let everyone know who i am haha. oh, my explorer itself. i havnt drove it yet even, parents had it for their daily driver, it started gettin old and dieing (severe lack of maintenance helped that along) so they bought a blazer. its been drove a few times since, once he let a friend borrow it while friends car was dead, and friend claimed it overheated, possible blown head gasket. the hood release cable broke or stretched or something... so i'll probably just take out that latch and turn some hood pins and either drill and nut them in place or weld them, either way it'll be held shut. ive read somethin about a ghetto lift with movin the leaf springs above the axle, and something done in the front to get lift. if this is safe, i might consider it, but i think i'd really prefer to drop it.
if i tear it down to replace the head gaskets, i'd like to clean up the heads real nice, possibly port the intake runners, hell even the exhaust if i can find a template to go by. might as well if im gonna have it all apart no? although i would kinda like to get a dyno run before doing any mods, so i can see how much improvement it made. i know the tranny has some problems, prolly jsut replace it if i do anytihng to it. anyone know a general cost for a sufficient rebuild kit? ive read that it's good to buy 2 kits to get some parts each other one dont have then some overlap. how hard is it to rebuild a tranny? i mean i'm mechanically inclined and im able do do precise machine work, indicating the pieces and all. but i have no idea whats involved in rebuilding a tranny. wow this post has become horribly long, i hope it gives everyone an idea of who i am. haha and its almost 5 am, who needs sleep...
