1999 UK Explorer Red/Grey
Hi All

Just joined up with you and thought I'd pop in here and say howdy. I have just bought a 1998 Explorer and am getting to know as much about it as possible (I can't yet tell you what model as the paperwork just says 'Ford Explorer'. She's in beautiful condition but the motor, at 163,000 miles, is idling rather lumpy. I think I hear some timing chain rattle on startup too but it disappears when she warms up. Apart from that she is a beauty and everything else on her is working just fine.

The reason I bought her is to tow a boat I am about to start building. My 'other car', a Peugeot 806 MPV is not powerful enough. I plan to do the Explorer up under the bonnet. May install a recon motor if it's needed. Plan to tow my boat all over Europe and the UK and launch her to explore the Med, particularly the Greek Islands and Turkey.

Flew all over the world but never got to see much up close and personal. Now I'm retired, I plan to go back to all the really interesting places and look at them from sea level - or thereabouts! :D

Anyway, hope I can contribute some as well as learn from all you more knowledgeable guys 'n gals.

Best wishes

Hello & Welcome--no better place for Explorer info anywhere but here. Grab a spot o'tea and get ready to read just about anything you ever imagined and didnt imagine on Explorers!

Hi Biggles62
Shouldn't you be flyin rather than sailin LOL
Welcome and come say hi to the uk guys (front page, scroll down to clubs and land issues)
As for your engine rattle fit the updated front cam tensioner, restrictor pencil and new rear cam tensioner. The front and the pencil come in the 00m12 kit and the rear can be bought separately. If you do a search about this kit you will have a bit of bed time reading. If you think you're not up to this job then in Newport there is a specialist, Justin @ explorerparts uk. give him a call, he's good for advice or parts. For used parts you can also get great deals from chrisquelch (member) as he breaks ex's

Well thank you Grnmachine. I was hoping for precisely that. Learning already.

Ha ha. Thanks for that welcome. I am retired from flyin - and don't miss it after pushing aluminium most of my life. Sailing is something I've done for just about as long but always as a love rather than a job. Big difference. :D

Thanks for the heads up on the place in Newport. I'll give Justin a call tomorrow. I have been boning up on the V6 and read about the cam tensioner issues. I'll definitely get that possibility checked out. If I can get that problem fixed this car will be a real winner. I love it more than my Peugeot and I've only had it parked out back for a day! Just something about it that puts a big grin of satisfaction on my face.

Regards
