Hi, since two months I am the proud owner of a blue/grey 1998 Explorer XLT with 93000 miles on the odometer! This month I had it converted to run on LPG (propane). With my previous car being a Saab 900 (1997) the Explorer is an even more fun car to drive! Lots of space and a very smooth ride. I'm even planning on doing some off-road driving in the near future (even though the dutch landscape is mostly flat and completely fenced )

I will be checking this forum on an regular basis!

Seems like quite a few people overseas are doing LPG conversions on gas hungry vehicles like the Ex... I know fuel over there is very expensive- is it a fairly large percentage of SUV drivers that are doing the conversion? Just curious...

The people I know that drive an SUV like the Ford Explorer, Jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee all had an LPG conversion. So nationwide I guess it's a pretty big percentage. Even normal sized cars are increasingly converted to LPG.

With a gasprice of about $ 2.00 for one liter (!) of petrol, LPG is a very good alternative. One liter of LPG costs about $ 0.60.

I know that as much as we complain about gas prices here, it's a lot worse over there!

For the people not familiar, the conversion means that Hans would be paying just under $8.00/gallon for gas right now. Yikes...

The government should have given us free LPG conversions on any vehicle that is not gas efficient instead of the cash for clunker program. It would have been cheaper than their $4,500 rebates on new vehicles, and more practical than destroying working vehicles. They say that LPG converted vehicles last longer since they have less carbon deposits in the engine. This also means fewer oil changes, and less oil being wasted.

The spare tire located under the car has been removed and replaced by a 77 liter ring-shaped tank. The tankcap is located below the rear bumper.

Thanks to the conversion I now pay about 2,5 dollars per gallon of LPG in stead of 7 or 8 dollars per gallon of petrol!

Well, fuelconsumption in Europe is stated in the number of kilometres you can drive with one liter of fuel. City driving combined with driving on the higway I can drive about 6 or 7 kilometres with 1 liter of LPG.

I think that's about 16/17 MPG, but correct me if I'm wrong.
