I don't own an Explorer, my current rig is a 1989 full-size Bronco. It's almost where I want it.... and now it's probably time to get rid of it. I'm in need of more doors and (mostly) rear shoulder belts.

I feel like a gen 2 Explorer would be a good fit, and this seems to be the place to learn about them! So, hi!

While I'm here, if anybody wants to share their thoughts on potential problems to look out for while shopping, the manual vs automatic transmission debate, or anything else Explorer related, I'm all ears.

Of course, I'll continue to dig through the posts ans search in the meantime.

The 2nd gen Explorer is good platform. I would stay away from the SOHC V6. Either the V8 or the OHV V6 would be good choices, the newer the better.

Hello again everybody.

I have sold the Bronco and picked up a 1997 5.0 AWD Explorer XLT.

It needs a fair bit of work, but I got a great price on it, and I'm capable of doing it myself. It is currently in the garage getting some of the new parts installed.

Welcome to this forum! The 5.0L is a good choice. What kind of work does it need?

Front upper control arms, front driveshaft cv joint, fuel filler neck, and a whole bunch of little odds and ends (door handles, etc). It also needs a bit of bodywork, a very thorough cleaning, and some TLC - fluid changes, tune-up, etc.

I'm also planning on swapping out the stock fuel pump. It's got 250,000km on it, and I think it's just insurance at this point.

Seems pretty simple to work on so far. I think the body work and the fuel tank will be the hardest part for me.
