I have a 91 Explorer that I bought last November, with 63k miles at the time.
Only 2 windows worked, paint was faded, but it started right up and it ALWAYS purrs like a kitten and starts right up.
I use it for work (I'm a sales rep), and although mileage isn't the greatest (V6), it's got plenty of space and 4wd, so I never have to worry about getting stuck.
Unfortunately, in addition to the 2 non-working windows, the only other major problem I have is in the cooling system. Apparently, the previous, original owner was a woman who only drove back and forth to work only a few miles away from her home, and as a result maintenance was an iffy thing.
One of the things she never did was put anti-freeze in it. As a result, when I bought it, the cooling system was full of what can be called mud.
I did a rudimentary flush last year, basically running the engine, boiling over, draining, and refilling with water until it was mostly clear, then drained again and filled with coolant.
FFWD to today, almost a year and about 40k miles later, and my heater core went. Thanks to this awesome site, I realised that replacing it was incredibly simple compared to my last truck (Suzuki Grand Vitara), which was a 2 day process and involved removing the entire dash board.
I havent replaced it yet, because its warm and I figured I should really clean out my system properly first, which is what Im working on and taking a break from right now.
I removed the **** from the bottom of the radiator, and nothing came out, so Ive been trying to clean it out from the top by boiling and refilling, and hoping that the turbulence combined with the clean water would work it's way down to the bottom of the radiator and remove the blockage.
That didn't work after an hour, so I'm letting the truck cool off and Im going to remove the hose at the bottom of the radiator and see if I can shoot some water in there and get to it.
Just wanted to extend a hearty thanks to all the posters here for being an incredible resource and helping me save some more money in the process. =)
Have a great weekend.
