I have a 2001 Explorer 2x2 with a blown 4.0 SOHC. I also have a 1997 Explorer 4x4 with a good 4.0 ohv. What do I have to do to make it work in the 2001 2x2? I plan on starting this project tomorrow afternoon. Any advice would help. I also have been a Mechanic for the last 25years , but never thought I'd be doing .

Not gonna happen. You would need to take the transmission, engine, all computer control, the instrument cluster, at a minimum and swap them all over. That is if the ABS systems are compatible.

What if the the PCM is reflashed?

Nope, different PCM. Are the dashes the same in both? Cluster will look awfuly goofy if the guages are behind bezzel.
The 01 has a digital odometer not worried too much about looks
