I am in the middle of fixing my wifes 97 Ex 5.0 AWD due to the water pump gasket and timing cover gasket gave out. While i'm in there I am changing the timing chain and gears. I was hoping to have a standard chain and not the silent type chain, but it has the silent chain. No one has it instock local and cant be here till Monday. I have read others say to install a Double Roller chain and gear set, yet I have searched and cant find jack about the swap out. I need some help here, I need to finish this by Sunday night and this chain/gears is preventing that.
The local stores do have a standard roller chain with gear set option that is also considered stock according to catalogs and their computers. It is double chain with cast iron gears, the chain doesnt look as big as the FMS one on their site. Half the price of this silent chain and gear set. Is this optional since its specifically for the Ex 5.0L ? Or is this a NO NO ?
The chain has a little over 1/2 play, which I am not gonna push either.
I also believe she might have cracked a head gasket slightly so I am doing a big maintenance job and replacing almost every part I can. So heads are coming off too. Its got 190k miles and has never gave us a problem except radiator, transfer case and a/c compressor. I just take care of it.
Any help would be great, I will keep checking back to see while I am working.
