Help - 99 Expl Changing Tires - can I replace just 1 Tire?

I thought it was illegal for a tire place to repair anything within a certain distance from the tread/sidewall area. Maybe this does not include sidewall repairs. Something to check into.

I don't know if its actually illegal or not, but I know that a lot of places won't patch the sidewalls - I think its for liability reasons. I had to replace two tires for that reason last year - one on the GF's Toyota Avalon and one on the Toyota PU.

J/K- I don't doubt the tires are a good deal. Tire rac has them for $151.00 each.

Yeah, now somebody buy them! If I wasn't driving a truck with 17s they'd be on there!

well... if youre offering the rims with the deal and the wheels drive themselves to Cali it would be tempting! lol

If I had rims for them, I'm sure we would be able to work something out.

IMO I would NEVER drive on a tire with a sidewall repair. Never heard of a REPUTABLE shop that would fix a sidewall, not sure on yours, because its a leak? Where is your leak at? The only problem with fixing it, is you have no idea how stable that is, and you don't wanna see the results if it goes. I was with my dad in our old suburban when a sidewall blew out, it was the ride of my life. We were lucky we didn't hit anyone or roll it. Good luck and safe driving.

Any shop that puts a patch on any side wall doesn't know what they are doing and you can tell them that I said so.

Ok - tell me what you guys really think! :)

The repair was a small - pin hole size leak. I saw it when tested in the water trough. The hole is about 1 1/2 inches below where the tread lugs stop coming down the sidewall. Its more of the upper sidewall than actual sidewall.. Nonetheless, it is the sidewall. The shop has been around for 15 years and does A LOT of business. He says he repairs them all the time - if -they look repairable. And like Dogfriend mentioned - shops wont do it for liability reasons - and - they want to sell tires!

Not defending my choice - not saying its the right thing - then again - not saying its the wrong thing:) Just sharing what I know and what I did... Will try and remember to get back to you and let you knw how it holds up...

My feeling is that no matter how high or low a punture in a side wall is, it is still a punture in the side wall. The side wall is usually the weakest area of a tire.
I have done some foolish things like last year or so putting my brand new never used 12 year old spare tire on my car. However even though we only use the car no further than 5 miles from home, I took it off shortly after because of the "what if" factor was always in the back of my mind. I actually drilled a few holes in the tire so that no one else would use it.
So I understand its your decision but I am just offering my opinon. If you feel comfortable using it for your needs then do so.
