Every once and a while the past few days I hear a really loud humming/buzzing noise coming out of my air filter cavity. It SEEMS to happen if I have been idling a while- but I'm not sure. It just started happening- a couple times- but not all the time. Of course I have only owned the 96 Explorer for 2 weeks now. Is something getting caught in my filter? Any thoughts? Thank you!

Since doing that video, I have found that cleaning the felt filters inside the vent cap will help for awhile, but eventually the noise will come back, usually when the weather gets warm (+90°F). But cleaning the felt filters is easy, so I just do that whenever the noise reappears. I'm still using the same IAC as in the video.

I replaced my original IAC because of a stalling problem when it wouldn't maintain a high enough idle speed. That IAC never made the noise. The replacement one works like a champ, but developed the noise after 2 or 3 years of use.

I don't know if its humming now; I have only driven it about 30 or 40 miles since February (15 mpg vs 48 mpg). :D

exactly

Ah yes- that video is EXACTLY it! thank you! i will try cleaning the felts. it is weird that it doesnt always manifest the humming.

it is weird that it doesnt always manifest the humming.

On my truck, it seems to be related to the outside temperature. When it gets into the high 90° or 100° temps it is more likely to hum.

I will probably drive my Ex to work tomorrow cause my other car is getting an alignment, so I'll check to see if that holds true. Its supposed to hit 103° by Wed this week. :fire:

Mine has started going WOOOOOO, and I thought it was something with the exhaust. I will have to do this and get that d@mn ghost out of my car!

mine does what the video does but only when it gets under a quater of a tank. if its from a quater up to full it sounds fine.
