Hello.

I have a annoying problem. When it's really cold (below -24 C or -11 F?) the alarm comes on and the battery goes flat because the alarm goes on for hours.

This happens at night (usually coldest period of the day) and my wife go really mad in the morning when she cannot start the car to go to work.

Is there a sensor or anything that can cause this? If so, can it be disconnected and so this won't happen?

What about disabling the alarm system completely? I have thought of removing the fuse, but as far as I can remember, it will disable other things like 4x4....

This is a 1997 4x4 4.0 explorer (European version).

Please help!

When my parents owned my Explorer, it started having similar alarm problems. A new battery solved the problem.

Voltage

That is not the case here; the battery is brand new. Have written off the possibility that low voltage is the cause to the alarm goes off.

A had a friend's taurus which did almost the same thing.

At around 2-3am (when it's coldest) the car would either unlock itself or the alarm / panic alarm would go off

(Granted it never gets anywhere close to -24C here)

Anyway, we narrowed it down to the key fob (remote). Her room was almost above garage and our guess is that either the fob was beginning to malfunction (and sending a faint signal to the car) or the battery on the fob was failing. We took out the battery on the fob to disable it and used the spare fob and key --- it never acted up ever since.

Unfortunately we never got to changing the battery on the orig fob since the car was totalled about 2 months later
