I am in the process of removing the driveshafts to get to the transfer case to get to the tranny to remove it...these bolts are tight and I have tried a lot! Even used a splitting maul but not one will budge. The other problem is whenever I try and remove one of the bolts, the differential moves the entire Explorer drives almost off the jacks!! I need help ASAP...I have the tranny in nuetral...is the e brake supposerd to be on?
HELP!!

sorry, edit: this is on a 1996 explorer 4x4 eddie bauer

Ima idiot, just saw a post by brooklyn bay "make sure your e brake is set". Chiltons manual said to put it into nuetral...????

Still would apprecitate help though

I use an "alignment tool" (or line-up tool - basically a large long hardened steel punch) to stick through one of the holes in the diff end of the driveshaft, on the plate where the driveshaft yoke bolts to. Then when the shaft turns, the part of the tool that sticks through hits the diff, and prevents the driveshaft from moving. Also works like a charm in reverse when tightening the bolts as well.

Sears/Kmart sell them under the Craftsman brand if you can't find them anywhere else.

Than you anime! Took about 4 hours but got the 4 loser bolts out. Now to thge front driveshaft...(this is a NY vehicle so it's just pleasant to work on underneath)
