Hello all
My wife just called and says her truck wont go over 2k RPMS and its struggling to get up hill, she says no check engine light and it seems to be running ok just wont go over 40 MPH.
Does this sound like a bad cat? how do you check to see if a cat is bad? she cant get on the freeway so I told her to leave it and I will go look after work.
So what do I look for????
Thanks

Dean

Make sure your air filter is not plugged, how old is the fuel filter? An EGR valve (if equipped) stuck open can cause a similar problem. A Cat failure without a check engine light is unusual. Check the simple things first.

Just replaced the fuel filter 5k ago how do i check if the EGR is stuck open?

clogged cat

Will clogged cats throw a code?

don't know if the diaphram is visible on that to see if it's seated. A vacuum pump to actuate it might work. May also want to check fuel pump pressure.
How dirty was the fuel that came out of the filter?

Not directly, but may see an O2 sensor code or PFE(EGR) code.

Thanks ghosttrain2! you are everywhere lol

Ok Im gonna do the vacuum test and see if the level drops and stays there and check the EGR too. thanx for all your help

How clean is your MAF sensor? It's attached to the airfilter box.

I cleaned it last when I changed the coolant a few months ago.

Cool-hope you figure it out! If the exhaust sounds differant to you, you may want to also see if there is a kinked/bent tailpipe.

Man I just skimmed through your rebuild thread awesome!
