HELP! Check ADV TRK and front end 'whumping'

I need help! BAH!

So here's the story. Back in October (registration time) I had to replace the front right wheel bearing. Since December it has been making a similar noise in the front end (left side). I let it go on for a while as my mechanic told me to let it go until it go worse. Since January, I have been getting a message in the message center about "Check ADV TRK" and then "ADV TRK OFF". Since this has been happening I have been getting an ABS feedback before that message comes up -- will go on randomly. When the ADV TRK goes off, the abs shuts off completely. ABS displays on the dash and the Roll indicator (looks like a vehicle with S shaped lines below it like a vehicle skidding) both come on when this happens. After these go on and the advance trak goes off, ABS doesnt work as normal and it shows the 4x4 light occasionally.

Finally, about 2 weeks ago, i tried to drive and the thing was locked into 4 wheel drive, would not go outof it at all. I could barely drive the damn thing, went maybe 2 mph and nothing more. Finally got it to kick out and got it to ANOTHER mechanic.

These guys replaced the front left bearing as they were hearing the same sound. That didn't fix it, they even replaced the CV joint thinking that would do it. No luck. Still making a strange sound when driving and doing the light thing with adv trk. So now it is making a 'whump whump whump' sound when you turn the steering wheel either slightly to the left of right. You can feel it (so it seems) on the left side mainly. The sound seems to be concurent with the speed of the vehicle, meaning the whumping goes faster or slower relative to speed.

So, these guys think it might be the 4x4 differential...but are not sure. They dont want to just keep putting $$ into it if no need.

I need help!

Any ideas? Anything to check to test to find what it is?

I'm assuming you have the dash switches 'auto' etc?

Is the ABS fixed with the new hub?
Adv Trk and ABS and the 4WD system are all tied together to make Adv Trk.
Locked in 4wd could mean the module or motor could be going out. search on 4x4 module it should be a BW4411.
Does it do it on a hoist, the next step is to see if the 4x4 is shifting correctly it still maybe stuck. Another idea is it could be damaged in some way by the ABS system fooling it and turning it on when it shouldn't. I've hear you can damage the xfr case by keeping it engaged while make a sharp turn, its supposed to give by turning off the 4x4 for a second then back on and over and over again till you complete the turn.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yea it definitely didn't fix the ABS issue -- still giving me all the same light/warnings. I'm driving on it now, when the truck starts up it just has the ABS light on, as you start driving (maybe a few hundred yards) all the other warnings come up. Hasn't been locking the 4x4 up and when turning you don't hear the 'thunk' sound when the 4x4 comes on and off temporarily. Its just in 2 wheel drive right now as i can spin the back tires, but it did get stuck in 4x4 that one time.

I just hope its not something bad with that whump sound everytime you turn the wheel slightly. I'm 350 in so far...sucks spending big bucks espcecially these days.

I would hate to go to the stealership...but do you think that may need to happen?

you need to fix the ABS first it might be fooling the 4x4. . . .
stealership will read ABS codes, i found my local Midas shop can too for about half the price. Thing is most readers don't support enhanced ABS codes.

On my 04 the first sensor to go was the Diff ABS sensor, but with Adv Track you should have two more (not sure if the diff one is there in your case) next to the CV joints in the rear. . . check on those.

When i chased my ABS light, under warranty they said Rear Diff. Well couple of week after i did my brakes it came on again. So i started throwing wheel bearings at it, first the left front on some notion i forgot, still a light, so i buy another front wheel bearing (left side) and i also bought another Rear ABS sensor. Took it to my midas shop to install and guess what still a light. I was about ready to throw a brick but midas read the codes (they must have felt sorry for me) for free, turn up a C1440 code - Master Cylinder Switch $20 later all was fine.

Moral of the story, get the codes read might be cheaper in the long run imo, could have saved me $250. I went so far as buy software that could do the same for an old laptop.

You bought software for an old laptop to make it into a code reader? Was it complicated at all getting it to connect in?

Also, I just took a ride in it to hear the sounds -- make a few videos, ill have to paste them up. Makes the sound more when the wheel is straight or slightly to the left, then also when it is far to the right.

Im thinking about bringing it down to Ford when i get back from vacation in 2 weeks to see what they say, or even midas since you said they are much cheaper.

hardest part was filling out the order sheet. . .i went with Bowser Electronics, don't know the guy but the price was right.
I have an old Dell C800 PIII 1ghz, has 2 USB ports, running XPsp3 with 512mb of ram. Software install was really easy and straight forward, it came with a USB to Serial Converter, the the ODBII reader. Took about 15 min to install and plug into the vehicle and pull codes. I also paid about $90 for the Enhanced Ford Codes, which included everything, ABS, ETAC, Parking Sensors, just to name a few.

Check the section 'under the hood' one guy just posted a screen shot. I'll see if i can get screen shots of mine.

Try Midas and post what they get. . . .
