Well im having some problems changing my wheel bearings.
Started on the passengers side all went well until i tried pulling the cv out of the hub itself, Its like the splines are welded. Hub popped out of the knuckle no problem.

I tried using a slide hammer thing, it was a no go.
Tried using a gear puller type thing to and it didnt work.
I tried using a punch to hammer it out, didnt move at all.
I then tried heat still nothing but it was only a propane torch.
half a bottle of penetrating oil didnt do anything.
At this point i have knocked off the outer cv boot and there is grease everywhere, im swearing in the blistering heat.

So i go to the drivers side expecting the same problem, no way 10 mins and it was done, slide right off no problems at all.

I was forced to put it all back together with the ****ty old bearing and when i was driving home she was making alot more noise then before.

What would you do?

Also can i use a big pipe clamp for the outer cv boot? lol

Thanks

any ideas? im gonna smash on her some more tomorrow.
Has anyone ever heard of someones Cv spinning in the wheelbearing?
Like where it twists just a bit so its stuck on the splines?
I was thinking maybe because i let it get so bad and drove 600km's on it that maybe it got really hot and welded itself to the cv? can that even happen lol?

The passenger side is more prone to rust, due to that side ending up in the most puddles and storm runoff. Its most likely rust welded in there, and will take a bfh to get it out. Keep at it :hammer:.

im scared that if i hammer on the end of the cv it will mushroom and i wont be able to get a bolt on.
I keep imagining if i take one nice swing at it that it will just pop loose.

so put the nut on loose and than hit it with a piece of wood between the hammer and the axle stub end,,

that way it doesn't mushroom the end,

problem solved,,

hey now were thinking, ill give it a try, keep the ideas coming

Don't fool around, get a buddy to hold a long piece of wood and hit it with a BFH,aka a 8lb+ sledge hammer, keep the nut on it also just in case and just replace the entire axle. It's a lot easier.:D

do i need to pop out the top balljoint so the knuckle leans down?
im hoping im not gonna have to replace the cv id really like to just get the damn bearing out. im gonna tackle her with a bfh , ill report back.
thanks guys

Well 4 hours of hammering still nothing, talked to a mechanic he said i might need to take the whole knuckle & CV out and put it in a hydraulic press if its really that stuck.
AHH I JUST WANT IT TO SLIDE OUT LIKE THE OTHER SIDE

Think i could cut the CV in half to get it out?
Either way to put a new one in im going to have to take the tie rod and upper ball joints off right? ort you think i can squeeze it in?

On my buddys titan the CV's are way better , there six bolts holding each one to the front diff and you dont even need to take the shock out.

well iv given up, i think im stuck with this bad wheel bearing, i refuse to pay 600 at the mechanics

Try using the 3 legged puller again. Put it on and torque it down as tight as possible. then heat as best you can. then spray loads of high quality penetrant and leave overnight like this. in the morning you may find it has realeased. if not try and torque some more and repeat process.

Just get a new CV, or use a 20lbs sledge.......................... I say replace the parts... F it... seems like you've done near everything and it's simply fused together... Wait, what are you trying to do... just replace the bearing?.... At this point, would it really hurt to hit up a junk yard and get a CV?

Why not do what the mechanic is suggesting? Take the knuckle off if you can't get them separated. Then bring the knuckle-bearing-CV to a machine shop or to the mechanic and ask them to press them apart.
I would refrain from going to a junkyard for a replacement CV axle, they are under $100 new. For that cost why bother taking the chance of having to do this again in a few months?

True, good point. I was just saying a replacement CV in general. If these two parts are that badly fused together... it's junk.

well if i pop the knuckle out, i still cant pull the cv threw the hole in the knuckle, i think im going to have to cut it or something.
im not to worried about having to buy a brand new cv, i already knocked the boot off and its held on with zip ties haha

i just reread what you said, take the whole knuckle to the machine shop?
i might just have to, im going to talk to my neibour and see if he has a hydraulic press.
he a ford guy, ill take a pic of his truck and post it here, one hint 44" tires im so jealous

well no pictures but he does have a hydraulic press, so im ripping the knuckle out tomorrow.
any tips?
does the cv just pop off from the diff?
are these balljoints a B!tch to pop outta the knuckle?

The CV will pop out of the diff. You just need a big screwdriver to pry a little bit between the differential and the large inner part of the axle. Just pulling on it will not be enough because theres a little clip on the end of the axle that holds it in.

To get the upper:
The bolt that you see on the knuckle just below the balljoint must be removed from the knuckle before the post of the balljoint will release. That bolt actually holds the post from sliding out of the knuckle by passing through a groove in that post.

For the lower balljoint:
First, remove the cotter pin, then loosen the castle nut on the lower balljoint post to the point where it almost comes off. Then get yourself that sledgehammer you used before and hit the knuckle until it drops off the balljoint post. Pic below shows where to smack it like it owes you money. Don't worry, you will not harm the knuckle.
I have also posted the link to the pic, I have a hard time posting pics so hopefully one way will work for you.
