Help deciding to buy...pls

Hello. Had a '95 Exp for a couple years. Was decent, but never thrilled with it.
So...
Bought a Honda Civic for gas mileage. Decided at 40 yo, I didn't need to be driving a Civic!
So...
I sold it. Back to looking for an Exp or Mountaineer. I've seen 2 doors, but never ridden in them...due to circumstances, won't be able to test drive a 2 door until the weekend, so asking you guys.
I'm not all THAT concerned about speed. If I get 4 door, I'll go for the 5.0 instead of the 6cyl. But my main concern (after having the '95) is ride quality.
I want the best I can get. And then I'll do what I can to make it better/quieter.
(Yes, I know its a truck.)
So, is a 2 door vs. 4 door a noticeable diff due to the shorter wheelbase?
That being said, is a Mountaineer a noticeable diff to an Explorer? Is it "plusher" (probably not a word) and/or is it smoother/quieter?

I don't expect a Lexus, but would like a fairly decent ride, which my '95 was not. I'd like to get one, then tighten/replace/grease whatever I can to help.

Any help/thoughts?

Mounties have a softer ride (softer torsion bars) but they can easily be replaced on any Ex or Mounty. But it's still a truck.

As for quieter, you can add some hush mat http://www.hushmat.com/ or dynamat www.dynamat.com to your door panel's floor, roof or firewall.
