okay sense the weather has turned cold my ranger which i had plans for , (now i'm rethinking) there has been a slugish starting. I've put in a Die Hard Gold battery just back in the fall. And sense the weather has turned very cold, like at temps of 45 or lower degrees there will be sluggish starting. Tonight got back to the job site and jumped in the ranger and tried to start up and roll out. Problem, did not start had power to everything, And thought I heard something sound like a spining sound. Tried 3 times and would not start. After a moment of self composure (temp lost it) I got a rolling start and it jumped right away to start. My question is, possible starter problems? I called the ford dealership and they said it more the likely was a starter but possibly be the fly wheel spinning as well,, So my question is, wHAT'S the prob w/ the lil ranger, (money pit) is the nick name for it now, And if it is a starter how much would it cost to replace, ,, thanks for the help,,, dave :fire:

not sure on the newer rangers but on TTB rangers the starter takes maybe 15-20 minutes to change if you take your time. 2 or 3 bolts hold it on then a couple that hold the wires to it and you are good to go. I cant see how a cold start can be related to a flywheel problem. If your flywheel is spinning but the motor isnt then you have some major problems going on.

What year Ranger is this? Starters don't last forever, I would check that next.

it's a 98, just makes a rattleing noise when it inital starts like a scraping sound for like 2 seconds 98 xlt 2 wheel drive 4cly

we'll the garage called today, and said the AIC valve needs to be replaced, apparently it's stalling out after starting up ,, I think that's a totally diff problem now then what i was having. The tech, said that he tested the batt and it was great condition,, tried to dumpa large load on it and no signs of draining power. Soooooo anyone want a ranger?? errgh,, have to wait till monday to see if this is the whole problem,, he said it would be done for about 265,, total,,

we'll got the stupid ranger back from the shop today, lets see they replaced a AIC unit,, at 264 bones and still said i needed to replace the starter,,the AIC thing controls the idoling speed if i'm understanding correctly, and bought the starter tonight from auto z, and hopefully w/ a buddy at the dealership we'll put it on tomarrow night, so hopefully this truck will last for a long time now, other wise, You all need to let me know where a really big hill is!! lol

If your talking about replacing the IAC~intake air contol valve. It is just a lil solinoid on my 00 4.0 that costs about 50-60 dollars from autozone. This vaqlve is held on to the throttle body with 2 lil bolts and one wire conector. If thats all they replaced they ripped you off. It takes like 5 minutes to do. I would look into exactly what they replaced.

uhm see this is where i have problems, i'm not really in to fixing up this crap, detailing is more of my specialty, they cleaned the throttle body and replaced that IAC gizmo, i shouldtry to find the paper work and let you all know the charges, got my starter on though, !! for 20 bucks had a tech put that on, but i'll let u all know about the break down , i'm sure they charged me for the scan or test work to see what happend,,,
