Ok, the Ford dealership finally linked all of the problems I have been having to a bad muffler. So now I am pretty much set of a Flowmaster 50 series. I'm assuming that one isn't too loud right? What size do I need to buy? What type of inlet/outlet? I have a 5.0l 1997 Explorer.

Thanks!
Jon

Yeah, if you dont want it extremely loud go with the 50 series. Thats what I have. You will need a dual in/single out. Mine is a dual in/dual out. If you click the link in my sig you will see some pics of the setup under the truck.

Thanks for letting me know. Would it make sense to run two mufflers or just do the dual in/ single out?

with the 5.0 it would make sense to run 2 mufflers if you were doing dual exhaust, but not for a single exhaust.

Thanks for your help! I am going to order that muffler in just a second. One last question though, it says it is Dual in/single out. The inlets are 2 1/4" and the outlet is 3". Is the stock tailpipe really that large? If it isn't do I have to have a new one made?

I dont know. Take a look under the truck. I would have a new tail pipe made anyway to take out the resonator. Now, I'm 99% sure that the V8 system is the same as the system that the SOHC has, but just peak under the truck and check before you order stuff.

Alright, thanks. I'm at work now, but I will do that as soon as I get home.

no, your stock piping is not 3''... but 3'' is better than what you have for stock, so go to a muffler shop and have them weld on some new pipes and it will sound better and have better performance gains.

I would think the easiest way to do it is just buy a cat back system, it may be a little bit more expensive but it cuts down on the amount of work. Bolt on is the way to go...
