My '97 XLT Sploder is having some issues, and it's my only source of transportation so I'd really like to get it fixed! Several problems...for several months, there's been a really bad grinding sound that seemed to be coming from the front driver's side wheel/front diff. area. I think it was the 4x4 kicking in by itself, even on dry straight road, because when I turn the rig off and restart, it would quit for a while. It only made noise and shuddered when I was going between 15-35 MPH, after 35 it would also quit. Braking hard also seemed to make it start doing this.
Yesterday we had some bad flooding and I had to drive down a road in about axle-deep water, maybe a little less. Now, the above mentioned problem has changed to constantly ocurring between stopped and 30 MPH, and when I turn sharp in either direction, it feels like the CV's are binding up, more shuddering, etc. I took the rig by Les Schwabby's and the guy said the transmission is starting to slip, too. Any idea for sure what is causing these symptoms and what needs to be done? I know this is the wrong question to be asking, but how much longer can I run it under these conditions? It's the AWD control trac model, if that helps. Is there a way I can disconnect the front end so the rear wheels alone are driving?
As some of you know, I work for a railroad and thus have VERY little time to be able to sacrifice my vehicle, let alone the energy to take it in. Please also forgive my mechanical ignorance...I just drive it, and I need a relatively quick fix. Been thinking about an '05 or '06 Ranger!
