well i was backing upmy driveway when the transmission just made a single loud BANG. instantly the xlt just started coasting downhill as if it was in neutral. now i dont have any sort of reverse at all. it doesnt matter if i switch into 4X4 high/low theres still no reverse so i would assume it has to be a problem in the transmission not the transfer case...
anyone know of anything that might cause a single loud bang and for reverse to suddenly stop working? all the other gears work fine its only reverse that was affected. this isnt some old beater either its in good condition and hasnt been beaten on... its still a stock d.d!

ok well thanks for the responses. it sounds like this is something that i have to actually take apart the transmission to even diagnose whatever broke so i guess thats what ill have to do.
and thanks for such quick responses!

The only thing that occurs to me is maybe the band snapped...but I have a feeling that would affect something else as well. Do you have manual first?

not quite sure what you mean by manual first... its an auto with a 'auto/high/low' selection next to the center dash vents...

Drop the pan, remove the cover with 4 bolts (low/reverse servo cover), then remove the servo to see if the tip is cracked or if the band broke. Manual 1st is low gear (1, 2, 3, D, OD, N, R, P).

ok ill do that either wendsday or saturday depending on when i get a spare second. it sounds simple... how hard could it be;)

Same Problem
