i lost reverse on my 2000 sport with ohv engine .is there any electronic part that could cause this?or am i just screwed?
pulled forward ,went to backup like i always do ,the trans popped and i had nothing.

broken band??only 145,000 miles on it .

now i gotta ask ,keep fixing it or get rid of it?
i put 2k in parts and repairs in it this year .it still needs heads(its got at least 1 cracked one)fuel pump gave me problems in the heat this year.
next year it will need tires.
the repairs are going to exceed the value of the thing .i mean the body is good ,paints good too.but until i am done with all the repairs it needs plus what i put in it already i,ll have spent 4k on it .

i was looking to trade it in too and now this .f me!

anybody wanna buy me out of it?tons of new parts on it .

Remove the pan, the square cover with 4 bolts, then the low/reverse servo. Insert a long phillips screwdriver into the bore, and check the band to see if it has spring action. Inspect the tip of the servo, and the two O ring seals. Does manual 1st gear work? What about the 4 X 4 system?

good info i,m sure but i dont work on transmissions .couldnt do it here in the driveway either way .no garage either .i got a good mechanic though if theres an easy fix??

Start with those things since they are easy to check. The sticky called the 5R55E valve body rebuild diary has information on repairing the valve body. Sometimes it could have a sticking reverse modulation valve spool.

Brooklyn's right - there is no easy fix... But you can quickly determin if a band is broken (needs to be rebuilt).

Like he said above shift the vehicle into "1" on the selector lever. If the engine still "loads up" it may just be a reverse servo seal or valve body seal -

Sometimes a broken shift fork or shift rail in the transfer case could cause a no reverse condition, so you can't assume that it's always the transmission. Do you have a 0-300 PSI test gauge? You could check the reverse pressure, and the EPC pressure on the transmission.

i am no trans mechanic thats for sure .i will go see if it loads up on number 1 for you guys though .give me a minute and i,ll reply back .it loads up on drive i know that.

1 st gear still works guys .
does that mean the reverse band is still good?

but does 1st gear working mean the reverse band is still good?

ok 1st gear has no engine braking .

If there is no engine braking the trans is done. It needs and overhaul or replacement. I went through all this --- I replaced valve body, flushes, EPC solenoids, Reverse servo, gaskets and a partridge in a pear tree.... I just got my truck back this morn from having a new 5r55e in.

It probably has broken band.

what you pay for that??

no reverse

i have a 1999 explorer no reverse no 1st gear engine break is it posible to just fix the problem i was quoted 850 but wants they open the trans i cant afford any surprises does the trany have to come out to fix thanks

Welcome to this forum! You could check the low/reverse servo, and the low/reverse band with a long phillips screwdriver. No engine braking might indicate a rear sprag failure. Check the pan for broken parts.
