Hello all

I am putting everything back together on the engine after changing all the seals. This is the first time I do anything to an engine beside just looking at it, but the work has gone fairly smoothly.
However I just finished putting in the fuel rail with the fuel pressure regulator, and it looks like I have an extra vacum tube sticking out, but I have no idea where it goes. I thought it was the one for the pressure regulator but there is one there already. It is in the same sleeve than the vacum tube for the pressure regulator. Any idea where it might go ?
I will post a picture as soon I can get hosted !!

you sure its a vacuum line and nto a breather tube from the transfer case, or differential? if you follow the line back where does it connect or is the tube totally disconnected?

If I follow the line it goes to the top of the upper manifold intake.

That line runs into another line that eventually plugs into the rear of the air box. Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot. I figured it out by plugging everything else and checking out what was left unpluged.
However it seems that I have an other problem now: the truck is not starting anymore: the alternator cranks the engine but the engine doesn't start.
The sparkplugs are new, I checked the wires and they are fine, there is gaz in the fuel rail, and the fuel injector all have a resistance of 16 Ohms.
I am running out of ideas on what to do now

Any ideas ?

try resetting the ecu

How do I do that ?
I looked in the chilton and it just says to unplug it, but where is it ? what does it look like ?

Just disconnect the battery. Are the plugs in the correct order?

Battery has been disconnected for the past week so I would assume that the ECU has been resetted already.

I checked the plugs and they are in the correct order.

This is just a hunch, but when you relieved pressure on the fuel system, did you do it by way of the enertia switch located under the dash. If so, check to make sure the button is depressed. Its easy to forget.

Can you hear the fuel pump running? I guess the pump or the switch wouldn't be a problem if the fuel rail is getting fuel. You said injectors are ok. I'm stumped(although I don't know too much about that kinda stuff!) All wires pluged in?

I used the inertia switch under the dash, I just unplugged it. Then when I was done I plugged it back in and made sure the switch was depressed.
I can hear the fuel pump starting when I give power to the system. And there is pressurised fuel in the fuel rail.
As far as I can see all the wires are plugged.
I am stumped like a tree !
Is there a way to see if the spark plugs are firing ? Like pulling one out and connect it to the wire and try to start the car and see if there is a spark, or is that unhealthy ?

That's an acceptable way to check for spark. You could also use a timing light. While you're at it, be absolutely certain that you have the firing order correct, and the wires routed properly. I know you said that you had, but it's happened before: Someone thought that they had the wires on right only to find out they didn't.

Check all connections carefully and make sure you haven't missed any. I once had an engine I couldn't start after a repair, and I had forgotten to plug the fuel injectors back in. Don't forgot in checking connections to make sure all grounds are in place and making good contact.

Good luck.

I have checked the wires a few times, just to be sure. I took them out to check their resistance. And some of them seem to be off. Also the spark plugs are new and I am not sure if they are gapped properlly. what is the correct gap for the spark plugs ? I tryed looking in the Chilton but it doesn't say anywhere.

The fuel injectors were plugged as I had to take the upper intake manifold to unplug them to test them :-)

I also made sure that the connections were right when the upper manifold is out.

If the gap is correct on the spark plugs, I can just think that I messed up the firing order.
Anybody has a clear diagram that would show it ??

Big Thanks !
It looks like I had the driver's side wrong. I will change this and let you know as soon as I put everything back together.

Thanks a lot, I replaced the wires witrh new ones and plugged everything back in, and the engine started !

However sounds like there is an other problem: there is a very bad knocking sound coming from the engine. Ther oil level is good and the oil pressure gauge shows good pressure, so any ideas about that ???

Hopefully that will be the last problem !!

Don't be too sure about oil pressure. The factory gauge is a "dummy light". It just shows there is pressure and not how much.
